An interlinked coastal observatory network for Europe ArchiMer
Sparnocchia, S.; Nair, R.; Petihakis, G.; Aydogdu, A.; Dobricic, S.; Farcy, Patrick; Martinelli, M.; Petersen, W.; Petit De La Villeon, Loic.
Existing coastal observatories in European waters are complex systems consisting of different observational components, providing crucial operational data for assessment, model validation and assimilation purposes. However, the geographical, structural, functional and operational heterogeneities that characterise them pose an enormous challenge to their efficient exploitation as information providers on a broader, cross-border, regional scale. To address this problem, the European Union (EU) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) Towards a Joint European Research Infrastructure Network for Coastal Observatories (JERICO) project is creating a shared, pan-European framework for the networking of such observatories, promoting the identification and dissemination...

The Mediterranean community represented in this paper is the result of more than 30 years of EU and nationally funded coordination, which has led to key contributions in science concepts and operational initiatives. Together with the establishment of operational services, the community has coordinated with universities, research centers, research infrastructures and private companies to implement advanced multi-platform and integrated observing and forecasting systems that facilitate the advancement of operational services, scientific achievements and mission-oriented innovation. Thus, the community can respond to societal challenges and stakeholders needs, developing a variety of fit-for-purpose services such as the Copernicus Marine Service. The...

Deployment of new observing systems within the JERICO-RI ArchiMer
Puillat, Ingrid; Carlier, Antoine; Facq, Jean-valery; Rubio, Anna; Lazure, Pascal; Delauney, Laurent; Petihakis, George; Karlson, Bengt; Artigas, Felipe; Farcy, Patrick.
A key message of the JERICO-RI consortium (2014): “The complexity of the coastal ocean cannot be well understood if interconnection between physics, biogeochemistry and biology is not guaranteed. Such integration requires new technological developments allowing continuous monitoring of a larger set of parameters”. In agreement with this consideration, several new observing systems are developed, tested and deployed in the framework of the JERICO-NEXT H2020 project, amongst which a few of them will be presented as well as some preliminary results after the first deployments. Focus will be given on coastal transports and hydrology and on benthic biodiversity. In the first case, we will present a low cost 2D moored system dedicated to acquire vertical...

Petihakis, George; Petersen, Wilhelm; Nair, Rajesh; Faimali, Marco; Pavanello, Giovanni; Boukerma, Kada; Delauney, Laurent; Puillat, Ingrid; Farcy, Patrick; Greenwood, Naomi.
The JERICO European research infrastructure (RI) is integrating diverse platform types such as fixed buoys, piles, moorings, drifters, FerryBoxes, gliders, HF radars, coastal cable observatories and the associated technologies dedicated to observe and monitor coastal European seas. The first steps of setting up, coordination and harmonization were done during 2011 to 2015 in the framework of FP7-JERICO (www.jerico-fp7.eu), a 4-year long infrastructure project co-funded by the European Commission with 27 partners from 17 European countries under the coordination of IFREMER. Next steps are driven in the H2020-JERICO-NEXT European project until 2019, involving 33 partners. The main objective of the JERICO consortium is to establish a Pan European approach for...

Farcy, Patrick; Puillat, Ingrid; Beaume, Nolwenn.
The main objectives of the 2nd period were to finalise the “best practices handbooks” for glider (with GROOM), ferrybox and fixed platform. The project organises also workshops on JRA (Villefranche in October 2013) for presenting the mid-term results of WP10. JERICO also launched the second and third calls for Trans National Access. The mid-term review has been pass successfully in june 2013. The second general Assembly was held in Oslo on the 5th and 6th of May 2014. A dedicated JERICO website has been upgraded. All the submitted deliverables (except the consortium agreement) are available on this site: www.jerico-fp7.eu

Morin, Pascal; Durand, Dominique; Puillat, Ingrid; Farcy, Patrick.
The objectives of JERICO are to address the challenge of observing the complexity and high variability of coastal areas at Pan-european level, in the framework established by European Directives (WFD, MSFD) and the operational marine services (GMES) by: - setting up an European Research Infrastructure for coastal observations based on existing systems in European coastal and shelf seas. - supporting standardization of methodologies for the benefit of data quality, data availability and cost efficiency. - promoting the cost-effective use of the facilities. - stimulating the development of new automated systems for the operational monitoring of the coastal marine, environment, with focus on the biochemical, compartment. To reach these objectives the JERICO...

JERICO. Report after 1st General Assembly and JERICO Best Practices Workshop - Oct. 2012 ArchiMer
Farcy, Patrick; Puillat, Ingrid; Petihakis, Georges.
The First JERICO General Assembly was organised in Heraklion on 1st & 2nd Oct. 2012. The coordinators took the opportunity of this important meeting, where most of partners were present, to organise other specific workshops and meetings plus individual WP meetings. Indeed, partners met in an informal way in short parallel WP meetings on Monday morning to prepare for the General Assembly discussions and to coordinate WP activities. In the afternoon of 1st Oct., a dedicated meeting officially gathered the TNA (Trans National Access) selection panel to debrief and conclude after the first TNA call and selection process. Up until the meeting date, 6 proposals have been given the green light and needed to be definitively validated to start. In addition, 3...

JERICO. Report after the Strategic workshop # 1 (Heraklion) ArchiMer
Farcy, Patrick; Puillat, Ingrid; Durand, Dominique; Beaume, Nolwenn; Pichard, Maelle.
One of the main JERICO objectives is to establish a strategy for the future of the coastal observation. In other words, firstly JERICO has both to perform the state of the art with regards to European coastal observation systems and to help harmonizing technologies and sharing knowledge. Then according to the results of this first stage, the project will deliver a strategic plan to step forward. As a starting point, a roadmap was written in deliverable D1.2 “Rationale and Definitions for a Common Strategy” to give a framework to the project participants and inform about intentions. The following step in the process was to organise a strategic workshop #1 which is reported in this document. In the following report presentations made during the workshop are...

COAST-HF (Coastal OceAn observing SysTem – High Frequency) is a French national observation network of the physical and biogeochemical dynamics of the coastal ocean, at high frequency. COAST-HF aims at understanding and analysing changes of contrasted coastal ecosystems at different temporal scales from extreme or intermittent high frequency (hour, day) events to multi-year trends. Since several years (from 2000 for the longest time series in Bay of Brest), the network extends along the English Channel, Atlantic and Mediterranean French coasts through 14 fixed platforms instrumented for the in situ high-frequency (≤ 1h) observations. Several French research institutes (IFREMER, CNRS, Marine Universities) are operating these systems. The organization of...

This document reports on the science strategy required to answer the targeted scientific questions, policy requirements, and societal challenges linked with the observation of the European Coastal Ocean as elaborated within the framework of the WP 1 of the JERICO-NEXT project. The structuration of JERICO-RI science strategy is in line with the scientific strategies put forward by current major international initiatives regarding the observation of the ocean (i.e., GOOS, EOOS and EUROGOOS). The main elements of those general strategies are: (1) technological innovation, (2) the enhancement of integration/coordination, (3) the developments of interactions between observation initiatives acting over different spatiotemporal scales, (4) the optimisation of the...
